This inspectorate functions within the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Development and is responsible for: Food safety inspections; phytosanitary, veterinary, agricultural, fisheries, animal husbandry, beekeeping, hunting, and forestry.

The Agency of Food and Veterinary develops and implements the policies of the Government of the Republic of Kosovo, for the protection of the health of animals and plants. Through them and border control, it aims to protect public health by guaranteeing safe food. The AUV gives responsibility for its own work to the Government of Kosovo. The Government of Kosovo has delegated the AUV as the authority for control in the field of safety, hygiene, tracking and labeling of food and animal feed in the areas of processing, packaging, distribution, wholesale and retail sales according to national legislation and harmonized legislation of EU.
